What to look forward to at Podiatry Conference 2013

The workshops: This year's event has more workshops than ever before, covering range of topic and giving attendees the chance to take real, hands-on skills back to their day-to-day practices. And earn extra CPD points while doing it!

The keynotes: Dr Russell Volpe, Mr Karim Khan and Professor Jim Woodburn will be presenting on their areas of expertise as our distinguished keynote speakers.

The exhibitors: Our Hall of Exhibitors is fully booked with some industry leaders and top-tier brands, showcasing the latest and greatest in the field of podiatry.

The Conference Dinner: To be hosted at the stunning harbour-side venue Dolton House in Jones Bay Wharf, featuring a three-course meal, wine, beer and soft drinks, dancing, award presentations and the ever-popular APERF auction.

AND, before the conference, for an exclusive group only, the Master Class with paediatric podiatry expert Dr Russell Volpe, hosted on Saturday June 1st for a strictly limited number of members. Email pauline@apodc.com.au for pricing, availability and enquiries relating to this special Master Class event.

  Invitation from the Conference Chair

Brenden BrownAs the Chair of the Conference Committee, I am delighted to invite you to the Australasian Podiatry Conference, 2013.

The conference theme is Synergy: Research and Practice, and the number and strength of the workshop streams will illustrate our commitment to that catch line, whilst at the same time we will ensure a very strong team of speakers. We have worked hard to ensure that practitioners will go home with new or enhanced skills they can use the day they get back to work.

We can look forward to presentations that promote and elaborate upon the latest research findings and which also highlight the link between scientific advance and contemporary and emerging podiatry practice.

Our timing is perfect. The healthcare landscape is going through a period of rapid and profound change offering a range of opportunities to podiatry. For instance, podiatry’s significant contribution to the management of chronic disease states is ever clearer, and the evidence builds for more extensive and intensive interventions. Governments and others in the health care continuum are persuaded by evidence, and that, after all, is why we have a scientific conference.

We have three major themes and these range from chronic conditions management (incorporating diabetes, rheumatology, obesity, high risk foot) :  to musculoskeletal rehabilitation (incorporating sports medicine, biomechanics, paediatrics, pain management, and rehabilitation); and clinical practice and education (incorporating concepts such as translating research into practice, broader education, and conducting research).

There will be concurrent sessions so that everyone can attend presentations that are relevant to their specific fields of expertise or interest, and posters are not neglected.

It is my hope that every delegate will leave the conference armed with a set of new or enhanced skills they can incorporate into practice and share with their colleagues. All to the benefit of patients and the health care system generally.

Of course, there’ll also be plenty of opportunity for relaxation and networking, and the always entertaining APERF auction will be front of stage as the conference dinner.

The 2013 conference is, of course, in Sydney, which is without a doubt one of the world’s most dynamic and exciting cities. I am sure the same energy will infuse the conference itself.
