Dear Friends and Colleagues of ECIA,

What a wonderful and exhilarating conference the Queensland Chapter of ECIA presented from 27th – 30th August 2014.

We were thrilled at the large number of attendees at this exciting and thought provoking Early Childhood Intervention Conference. We welcomed 458 registrations from all over Australia including friends from Singapore, Malaysia, UK and the USA.

ECIA (Qld Chapter) would like to say a huge thank you to:
  • Our international keynote presenters for this event who were outstanding and challenged us with their thought provoking research and findings - Professor Barry Carpenter, Mark Innocenti and Professor Manfred Pretis

  • Dianne Fuglsang who gave us an insight into the life of being a parent of a child with a disability and Kunal Nimkar who also shared his experiences as a young boy with cerebral palsy. We were all touched by their honesty and transparency.

  • Professor Susanne Carrington and Professor Cate Taylor who presented insightful information about their latest research.

  • Bruce Sullivan who closed our conference with incredible vigour and passion and encouraged us all to be the best “people ” we could be.

  • The 17 exhibitors

  • 4 Sponsors: KPMG, Department of Communities, Brisbane City Council and Parents and Citizens of the Mount Ommaney Special School.

  • 80 highly acclaimed national and international professionals in the field of early childhood intervention presented their work and research

  • Mark Hunter who was our Master of Ceremonies. Mark did an amazing job at summarizing each of the keynote presenters and drawing our attention to the ‘Wave Wall’ that was slowly built over the 2 days of the conference.
We look forward to see you all again at the 12 Biennial ECIA National Conference in Melbourne in 2016.

With warm regards

Sandra Schuptar
Chair Person – 11th Biennial ECIA National Conference 2014.

Riding the Wave. Navigating the Tide of Change

Changes to the way families will receive funding for children with disabilities will soon become the reality in Australia. The impact of individualised funding in the early childhood intervention field will mean a major change for families who have a child with disability or developmental delay and also for the specialist and mainstream services that support them. Families of young children birth to 8 years will be making choices about services for their child in a market place that has not existed before.

There will be a shift to supports being offered in community settings, with specialist services changing the way they currently work. Supports will be focused on natural settings that suit the needs of individual families.

With the voice of inclusion, access and participation in community becoming stronger, there is change for educators in mainstream settings as well, with the need for capacity building of the sector workforce well documented.

This conference will explore how to navigate this tide of change to ensure that best practice in early childhood intervention is maintained and efficacy is promoted in this new environment.

Conference participants will hear from eminent international and national keynote speakers about dynamic programs and services, as well as parent speakers who are taking an active role in working with early childhood intervention practitioners and families. The information shared will promote universal access to home, education and care settings and community life for young children from birth to 8 years with disability and developmental delays.
